The quaint little sea-side town of Puri, located on the eastern shore of Orissa, facing the Bay of Bengal, is one of Indias holiest cities. It is the home of the Lord of the World, Lord Jagannath, whose awesome chariot procession gave English language, the word "juggernaut", the unstoppable force. The town comes alive during the Rath Yatra or chariot procession when the Gods who reside in the Jagannath Temple are ceremoniously transported to a garden retreat and the town is flooded with multitudes seeking salvation.
The other notable feature of the town is its beautiful beaches, some of the most delightful white beaches in the country. This beach is becoming an attraction for tourists from all over the globe. Most nights, the beaches play host to colorful markets. The Puri beach festival has events such fashion shows and rock shows which offers visitors a chance to mingle with the local population and imbibe the local flavour. The beaches which have excellent accommodation options, are never overcrowded and holidaymakers get to have entire stretches of the beach to themselves.
Puri is directly connected by trains from Calcutta and New Delhi. By Road Puri is just 65 kms from Bhubaneswar, Orissas capital. Bhubaneswar is well connected by air to all major cities of India.
